Review: Sable Alley Safari Lodge in Botswana

Sable alley Botswana | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Of all the trips you can take, a safari is sure to be the most life changing. I remember my first visit to Africa so fondly: the first animal I saw (leopard), the moment I saw the big five, and I will never quite forget my first boma. After a handful of safaris in South Africa and East Africa, I finally made my way to Botswana after hearing from other safari-goers it was the most authentic safari experience in Africa.

Fast forward another year and I was on my third trip to Botswana in just twelve months, this time making my way to Sable Alley for an Okavango Delta safari in a luxury bush setting.

Staying at Sable Alley Botswana

Of all the camps to choose from in the Okavango Delta, Sable Alley is the perfect choice for understated bush luxury. Located in the Khwai reserve, tents come complete with electricity, hot showers, and coffee delivered to your door each morning.

Days at Sable Alley start early, depending on the season game drives commence around 6:00am and breakfast is served half an hour earlier. From the camp you will immediately make your way through the landscapes of the delta, characterised by season (wet season is, as you guess, wet!) and a dryer experience through the lush green landscapes in the dry season.

Arguably the best time to visit the Okavango Delta is May through September, when the water levels rise and game viewing is abundant. This also means you can enjoy the delta in its’ prime, with water activities on offer such as riding in a traditional mokoro (dug out canoe).

Style Edit:

Dining at Sable Abbey takes place in the mess tent, though if you have a special occasion to celebrate or ask the staff to arrange it for you, you can also enjoy a special private dining service under the stars.

With just 12 rooms at the camp you will never feel crowded when in camp, but the hearty feel of the camp means the main area is always a great place to socialise and meet other safari goers. There is a pool at the main tent as well as wi-fi near the lounge, making it the perfect choice for switching off throughout the day with the option to quickly check emails at the start of the day.

Visiting The Okavango Delta

There are many reasons why a Botswana safari is my favourite kind and it starts with the Okavango Delta being one of the most incredible landscapes to view wildlife. Visiting the delta often means wild dog sightings, leopard, lion, and all the usual suspects such as zebra, giraffe, plenty of elephants and so much more.

If you’re hoping to see meerkats in Botswana, be sure to venture elsewhere to the likes of the kalahari desert (I made that mistake years ago and have been itching to get back to Botswana ever since!)

A very warm thank you to Natural Selection for arranging my trip to Botswana! All opinions and photos are my own.
